Rising Above Barriers to Freedom
My journey is one of courage, resilience and determination. Like many people who have experienced significant adversity, I have faced periods in my life that challenged my confidence and ability to express myself. Over time, however, I discovered that finding my voice could become an important part of moving forward.
Writing provided a meaningful way to reflect on my experiences, develop my perspective and communicate messages of hope and encouragement. Through this process, I came to recognise the importance of resilience, self-belief and the opportunities available to those who are determined to create positive change in their lives.
Education became another important part of my personal and professional development. I returned to education and challenged myself to pursue goals that had once seemed beyond my reach. I gained an LLB (BSc Hons) in Law, building on my previous Diploma in Health and Social Care. I also completed a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Concepts, further developing my understanding of people, their experiences and the importance of appropriate support.
Writing has continued to play an important role in my development. I have now authored three books, using a combination of personal insight and knowledge to inspire, empower and encourage others who may be facing difficult circumstances. My newest book, Rising Above Barriers to Freedom, is due for publication in October 2026. It explores themes of overcoming adversity, developing courage, finding one's voice and moving towards greater independence and purpose.
In 2026, I also took another significant step forward by establishing my own consultancy business. This represents an important milestone in my professional development and reflects the confidence, knowledge and determination I have built over time.
My journey demonstrates that difficult circumstances do not have to determine a person's future. Education, writing, self-belief and determination can create opportunities for growth and positive change. I hope my journey encourages others to recognise their own strengths, explore the opportunities available to them and believe that a different future is possible.
Progress is not always straightforward. There may be roadblocks, diversions, uncertainty and periods of exhaustion along the way. What matters is the ability to keep moving forward, adapt to challenges and remain determined to achieve meaningful goals. Resilience is not about never experiencing difficulties; it is about developing the strength and perspective to continue despite them.
Understanding the Wider Context
The ability to speak openly about domestic abuse can vary greatly from one individual to another. Although the UK has established legal protections and support mechanisms, including those strengthened by the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, the existence of services does not automatically mean that everyone experiencing abuse will feel able, ready or confident to access them.
Domestic abuse remains a significant social issue. According to the Office for National Statistics, an estimated 3.8 million people aged 16 and over experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales in the year ending March 2025. This included approximately 2.2 million women and 1.5 million men.
These figures demonstrate the continuing importance of awareness, prevention, education and accessible support. They also highlight why it is important to recognise that experiences of domestic abuse are not identical. People may encounter different emotional, financial, social, cultural or practical barriers when considering whether to seek help.
When considering experiences internationally, these barriers can be even more complex. In some countries and communities, individuals may face limited access to specialist services, financial dependence, social stigma, cultural expectations, geographical isolation or limited awareness of their legal rights. In some circumstances, legislation may exist without being easily accessible or effectively implemented, creating additional challenges for those seeking protection or support.
It is therefore important not to interpret silence simply as a lack of confidence or willingness to speak. Experiences of abuse can have a profound impact on a person's sense of independence, confidence and ability to make decisions. Fear, uncertainty and concerns about potential consequences can become significant barriers, even where support services are available.
My own experience has taught me that finding one's voice can be a gradual process. For me, writing provided a constructive way to express ideas, reflect on experiences and develop a stronger sense of purpose. Education provided knowledge and new opportunities, while personal and professional achievements helped strengthen my confidence in what I could accomplish.
Ultimately, my journey is not defined by adversity. It is defined by what I have built beyond it. Through education, writing, professional development and determination, I have been able to transform challenging experiences into opportunities for growth and purpose. I hope that sharing this perspective encourages others to recognise that their circumstances do not have to define their future, and that with the right support, opportunities and determination, meaningful change is possible.

Summary
With an academic background in law, I apply my knowledge of legal principles and legal frameworks to provide professional consultation, guidance, and support to individuals seeking a greater understanding of their rights and the legal issues affecting their circumstances.
My work focuses on using my legal knowledge and academic training to help individuals better understand relevant legal principles, procedures, and their position within the law. I aim to make complex legal concepts and processes more accessible, enabling individuals to develop a clearer understanding of their rights, responsibilities, and the options available to them.
In addition to consultation services, we offer McKenzie Friend support services to individuals who are representing themselves in court. This support is intended to assist litigants in person with understanding court procedures, organising and preparing relevant information, taking notes, and providing practical support during court proceedings, where permitted by the court. Our role is to provide informed support and assistance while respecting the boundaries applicable to a McKenzie Friend and the court's discretion.
Our services are designed to support individuals and members of the wider community through professional, knowledge-based guidance. We use our understanding of legal principles to help clients approach their circumstances with greater clarity and confidence, while recognising when matters may require advice or representation from a suitably qualified and regulated legal professional.
Our services are based on legal knowledge, consultation, and practical support and do not represent themselves as a substitute for regulated legal advice or legal representation where such services are required.
