A report out today in the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/the-northerner/2012/mar/12/manchester-economy-regions-daresbury-tax-devolution urges Westminster to "let go" of Greater Manchester so that it can lead an growth-based economic recovery. A leading group of economists have made a number of proposals to Danny Alexander, including more funding for the Business Growth Hub and Daresbury Science and Innovation site along with tax incentives, access to finance and other initiatives. All Manchester and North West business people should support this, go public and shout from the roof tops about it. At the end of last year, I saw Lord Heseltine speak at the Business Growth Hub launch, and his message was very clear; Mancunian business people have to demand their freedom to trade and grow with a high degree of autonomy. Manchester might need a mayor too, a very high profile figure. Someone able to take the fight to the Government and make them understand that all the rhetoric counts for little unless action is taken to "unleash" the power!
