Joint or separate appointments

Joint or separate appointments

Do you want to attend your appointment alone?

We offer both separate or joint appointments to you.

We understand you may be unable to, or may not wish to attend an appointment jointly with your ex-partner. This may be for a variety of reasons. Often this is a concern for clients when considering their initial meeting. We understand it can be difficult to meet jointly, when emotions are high, or when you have not seen one another for some time.

During the initial appointment, even when you do attend together, you will have the opportunity to speak with the Mediator on your own. The Mediator will need to spend a little time with each of you, speaking to you separately.

Most clients do attend mediation appointments together. If you can attend your appointments together, mediation can be quicker for both of you. When you attend together, you immediately receive one another’s replies to any discussions or proposals put forward in the mediation meeting.

In addition, the Mediator may also assist you both, by proposing further options that you may not yet have considered. You can both then decide whether these options are of help to you.

If you are unable to sit together in one room, then mediation process can proceed by way of shuttle mediation. In addition, the Mediator may determine that shuttle mediation may be more beneficial for you both.

Shuttle mediation is where the Mediator meets with you both separately. Shuttle mediation meetings can be held in different ways. You may be asked to attend the office at the same time as each other. Your arrival and departure times may be staggered. You may be seated apart in separate rooms and the Mediator will move between you both. Alternatively, you may be asked to attend completely separate appointments to one another.

Sometimes, clients who commence mediation on a shuttle basis, find they are able to attend joint appointments, together in the same room, as mediation progresses.
