🌀 Navigating Uncertainty: How to Take Back…

In a world shaped by rapid change—economic shifts, global crises, and personal crossroads—uncertainty has become our only constant.

And yet, as human beings, we crave stability. We are wired for rhythm, routine, and a sense of control. So how do we steady ourselves when the world around us keeps shifting?

These are the questions I hear most often:

🔍 How can I manage anxiety when I don’t know what’s going to happen?
🔍 How do I stay strong when everything around me keeps changing?
🔍 What can I do when I feel stuck or unmotivated because of all the uncertainty?

Let’s explore timeless wisdom and practical steps to help you reclaim personal sovereignty—even when the path ahead is unclear.

1. Manage Anxiety: Focus on Your Circle of Influence

– Stephen Covey

In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey offers a powerful distinction between our Circle of Concern and our Circle of Influence. Many of us exhaust ourselves worrying about things we can’t control: the economy, politics, other people’s opinions.

“Proactive people focus their efforts on the things they can do something about. The nature of their energy is positive, enlarging and magnifying their Circle of Influence.” — Stephen Covey

Try this simple exercise:
List what’s stressing you out. Sort it into three categories:

  • What I can control (my thoughts, actions, beliefs)

  • What I can influence (close relationships, work, community)

  • What I cannot control (world events, other people, nature)

Then redirect your energy to the first two. Even the smallest actions—like improving your sleep or setting boundaries—can bring momentum and calm.

2. Stay Strong: Clarify Your Core Values

– Brené Brown

When the world feels shaky, your values become your compass.

“When we are clear on our values, we can navigate tough decisions and unknown territory with courage and confidence.” — Brené Brown

I experienced this first-hand during a major health crisis. That moment forced me to reevaluate everything: not just what I was doing, but why I was doing it. (Simon Sinek’s “Start With Why” comes to mind here.)

Ask yourself:

  • What really matters to me right now?

  • What do I want to stand for, even when life gets messy?

Your values—whether compassion, creativity, or resilience—become your anchor and your fuel. They help you act with integrity, even in uncertainty.

3. Find Motivation: Discover Meaning in Uncertainty

– Viktor Frankl

“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” — Viktor Frankl

Uncertainty can bring burnout or paralysis. Especially during life transitions like bereavement, divorce, or identity shifts (like children leaving home), it’s easy to feel lost.

Here’s the truth: motivation doesn’t come from certainty—it comes from meaning.

You may often hear me say, “It all starts with you.” And it does. Uncertainty can be a signal—not a stop sign. Ask:

  • What is this moment trying to teach me?

  • Where am I being asked to grow, let go, or transform?

Meaning gives discomfort a direction. It turns fear into fuel.

What You Can Do Now

1. Practise Psychological Flexibility

Think of it like a mental muscle—the ability to stay grounded in your values while adapting to change. Start small:

Mantra: “I can feel uncertain and still take meaningful action.”

This shift frees you from waiting for clarity. You can move forward, even if you don’t see the whole path.

2. Build Grounding Habits

Structure creates safety. Try these rituals to restore stability:

  • Morning: journaling, stretching, breakfast with family

  • Evening: gratitude, screen-free time, hobbies

  • Weekly: nature walks, planning, digital sabbaticals

These practices become your anchor when life feels chaotic.

3. Connect with the Right People

Some people lift us. Others drain us. Choose your tribe intentionally.

Set boundaries with those who sap your energy (yes, even family). And spend more time with those who listen, challenge, and support you. You don’t have to do this alone.

“When we feel safe among our tribe, we are more likely to take risks, innovate, and adapt.” — Simon Sinek

4. Reframe Uncertainty as Possibility

What if this unknown isn’t a threat, but a doorway?

“Uncertainty is the fertile ground of pure creativity and freedom.” — Deepak Chopra

Think back to a life event that felt like the end—but turned into a beginning. That’s the power of perspective. You grow not despite the unknown, but because of it.

Final Thoughts: Take the First Step Back to Yourself

You can’t control the chaos. But you can:

✅ Choose where you place your energy
✅ Anchor in what matters most
✅ Take meaningful action, even if small
✅ Stay open, connected, and curious

Uncertainty is not the enemy—it’s the invitation.
To rediscover your power. To return to your core.
To become more you.
