When speaking to clients about fire safety and fire risk assessments I like compare this with car ownership, may seem a bit strange but bear with. Some people after purchasing their car simply do the bear minimum to keep it on the road - insurance / tax / fuel - only considering a service when the warning light demands. Although cars tend to be more reliable ultimately problems will occur and the fear of going for an MoT can be fightening. When taking your car for repair work / service in which you trust your life every time you use it, do you consider a person having learn the job as they go or alternatively has completed a 4-day course. Or do you use a garage where the engineers have qualification, years of experience etc. and guarantees.
Turning to Fire Safety and Fire Risk Assessments you pay for what you get. Its your business / your responsibility - its not always best to simply choose the lowest price and think that the fire risk assessor will simply take the blame if it going wrong. The responsible person (controlling mind - person awarding the work) will come under the spotlight. Look for a company with accreditation and years of experience, the price difference isn't that great but the end result could be. Check that the BAFE accreditation is for conducting fire risk assessment as opposed to simply servicing fire extinguishers (there is a big different). When you get your fire risk assessment report I reccomend that you send a copy to your insurance company asking to comment on suitabilty. This way there should be no issue if you're unforunate enough to have to make a claim. Remember undertaking a fire risk assessment (or employing someone to undertake it on your behalf) for your business is your responsibility. For more information & advise visit www.farmss.co.uk
