We’ve all heard the expression, “Success is a journey, not a destination,” but I like the extension that Arthur Ashe, the American tennis star gave us, “The doing is often more important than the outcome.”
The reason I like his thought is that philosophically speaking there won’t be an outcome at all unless we get on with the ‘doing’.
In our careers there is always more we can do: there is always more ‘doing’ we can get on with. The greatest feeling of success in our careers often comes from the small yet vital everyday achievements without which our own business or our employer’s business or organisation would fail.
Success is indeed the journey not the destination, but without enough ‘doings’ along the way, the journey will count for nothing and our life’s work will never be seen as the legacy we have spent our life developing.
