The average earnings of workers in the UK are the same as they were in February 2006. Inflation erased any gain in nominal wages in the past decade. Statistics from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show an average salary increase of 2.2% in the three months to August 2017, but when you consider the rising rate of inflation, real wages were actually down 0.4% on the same period in the previous year. A slightly more positive finding was that unemployment is at its lowest level since the 1970s – but unusually, that hasn’t allowed workers to bargain for higher pay.
