The statistics from the Ministry of Justice set out the number of cases presented to the Tribunals, those that were heard, those that were upheld and the amount of compensation awarded for unfair dismissal. The following tables list the awards made in the period April 2016 to March 2017: -

  • Total Initial Applications Made = 9039
  • Number of Cases Heard at Tribunal = 2139 (24% of applications)
  • Number of cases heard that were upheld = 712 (33% of cases heard)

Of the 712 cases that were upheld, 3 resulted in orders for re-instatement, 49 resulted in no monetary awards, 73 cases were left to the parties to agree an award and in 587 cases (83%) the Tribunal decided on the amount of the appropriate award, with the average award being £16,543.
The number of awards made within each monetary band were as follows: -

  • Less than £500 = 23
  • £500-£999 = 27
  • £1,000-£1,999 = 40
  • £2,000-£2,999 = 45
  • £3,000-£3,999 = 35
  • £4,000-£4,999 = 38
  • £5,000-£5,999 = 32
  • £6,000-£6,999 = 35
  • £7,000-£7,999 = 32
  • £8,000-£8,999 = 18
  • £9,000-£9,999 = 22
  • £10,000-£12,499 = 53
  • £12,500-£14,999 = 32
  • £15,000-£19,999 = 49
  • £20,000-£29,999 = 40
  • £30,000-£39,999 = 24
  • £40,000-£49,999 = 10
  • £50,000 plus = 32
