Corrie star, Kym, 34 and her fiancee, Hollyoaks actor, Jamie Lomas, 30, have welcomed their baby daughter Polly into the world who was born 7 weeks early. Polly is the couple's first child after they tragically lost their son Archie when he was born 18 weeks prematurely in February 2009. Kym and Jamie are engaged to be married. However, because the couple were not married to each other at the time of their daughter's birth, Jamie does not automatically have Parental Responsibility. Parental Responsibility is acquiring all the rights, duties, powers and authority that a parent of a child has by law. A mother automatically has Parental Responsibility for her child from birth. However, this is not the same for fathers if they are not married to the child's mother at the time of the birth. In order for Jamie to acquire Parental Responsibility of his newly born daughter, he has 3 options: 1. By jointly registering Polly's birth with Kym. 2. By entering into a Parental Responsibility Agreement with Kym. 3. By way of a Parental Responsibility Order made by a Court. It is likely that Jamie and Kym will attend together to register their daughter's birth and Jamie will therefore acquire Parental Responsibility via that route, however it is important to note that currently he does not automatically have Parental Responsibility and will need to obtain it.
