Contractors and freelancers are expected to be at the top of their game at all times and in the modern world this will often require the use of technology.
Instead of being seen as another hurdle to jump over, the self-employed have an opportunity to really embrace the latest innovations and make their jobs a lot easier.
Here is a rundown of five of the gadgets I think could help improve life for contractors.
1. Tablet Computer
iPad, Surface, Kindle, Note, Pad – take your pick, there are plenty out there. Tablet computers are a must for those looking to work in a more dynamic way. Whether you need to draw or pull up content during a meeting, or need a way to quickly take notes on the go, a tablet will enhance the day-to-day life of contractors. The ability to download and sync apps across multiple devices also means it’s easier than ever to manage schedules and work remotely.
Tablets are great for any downtime you might have too, between jobs, allowing you to unwind by playing a game, surfing the net, listening to music or watching video.
The lightweight nature of tablets is particularly beneficial for contractors who are often on the go. Tablets can be easily slipped into a bag or briefcase and won’t weigh you down like a laptop.
2. Portable webcam
While most mobile devices will have video conferencing capabilities, in a world where professionals are increasingly being required to converse with people overseas, the standard image quality on this technology may not be good enough.
Portable webcams are great, as they can easily be linked up to devices and give users perfect visuals of those they are conversing with. This is brilliant when building relationships with colleagues and saves time spent often trying to overcome technical difficulties.
3. FitBit
The life of a contractor is a busy one and consequently it might be difficult to keep on top of things like fitness. However, to ensure you’re available for jobs and can perform to the best of your ability, you need to be fighting fit. With the FitBit, it’s easier to be aware of fitness. The bracelet work wirelessly and allows you to count calories, workout minutes, and steps taken. The wearer can set goals, so it’s easy to keep track of how much exercise you’ve done that day via your smart phone or tablet.
4. LiveScribe Pen
The days of trying to make sense of your own notes are over with the brilliant LiveScribe Pen. As you write, your notes will transfer to your tablet or smartphone as typed text. You can even use the functions on the pen to tag and search work. What’s more, the pen can be synced to your Evernote account, allowing you to organise your projects and schedule in a more dynamic way.
5. Sat nav
As a contractor you’re often asked to travel far and wide to take on a position. It’s important for your reputation that you get there on time, but when going somewhere new it’s easy to get lost. This is why an up-to-date sat nav should be in the tool kit of every contractor.
Top tip: If you’re using a TomTom, it’s advisable to download and update the ‘QuickGPSfix’ on a weekly basis. This will tell your device where the GPS satellites will be for the next 7 days. Your navigation device can then calculate where you are very quickly and with only a weak GPS signal.
