Having never owned a dog before Georgie, I knew nothing about dog accessories. I wondered around the pet shop bemoaning the cost of everything and the endless useless equipment apparently 'required' for your dog. I remembered what I had learned from buying too much useless stuff when my daughter was a baby (that baby bath that precariously filled with water then spilled all over the bathroom floor being one) and left with essentials only. However, I did buy an extending dog lead. The fist few outings with the extending dog lead were eventful to say the least. I couldn't work out how to stop the lead extending, Georgie ran around a neighbour wrapping the lead around his legs and almost amputating his limbs and Georgie ran off so fast that he almost strangled himself and dragged me over when he reached the end of the lead.
However, after a few months we both got used to the lead and I started to notice something very interesting. Georgie would run ahead with the lead extending then he would slow down and start to walk before he got to he end of the lead. He had learned how long the lead was and had learned to stop before getting to the end and strangling himself. When the lead broke, I decided to by a longer one, as we were both now experts in the art of extendable dog leads. However, Georgie continued to stop at the same distance, as if it was the old shorter lead. He had learned this behaviour and was continuing to apply it despite the changes and had stopped pushing he boundaries.
So here's the question, how long is your lead? How many learned boundaries and limitations do you apply to your life that may no longer apply or be true?
What would happen if you pushed some of those boundaries or even got rid of them altogether? Think of the possibilities. So, what's stopping you?
