tHRiving Foundations: Why Start-UPs Need HR Operations Before Strategy

tHRiving Foundations: Why Start-UPs Need HR…

"We don't need HR yet."

It's one of the most common things I hear from founders building their first team. And it makes sense. When you're moving fast and every day feels like survival mode, HR feels like something for later.

But here's the reality: you're not too small for HR. You just don't need the version of HR you're picturing.

You don't need a Chief People Officer or a culture transformation programme.

What you do need:

  • Employment contracts that protect you legally
  • An onboarding process that doesn't feel chaotic
  • Policies that keep you compliant with UK employment law
  • A system for tracking basics (holidays, right-to-work, probation reviews) and the data to make informed decisions
  • Someone to call when an employee issue comes up and handle the day-to-day admin

This is HR operations. And it's what most start-ups and scale-ups need first.

Strategy without operations is just a nice deck that sits in a folder. You can't build a great culture if your contracts are missing key clauses, your onboarding is last-minute admin, and you're not compliant with basic employment law.

I set up tHRive Partnership because I understand this. I've built HR functions from scratch. And I genuinely enjoy the operational side - the admin, the systems, the problem-solving. When you're working with start-ups, you're doing both: sorting the contracts and policies while supporting founders with their growth plans. Once those foundations are solid, then we can focus on strategy, culture, and leadership development when the time is right. That's exactly how I work.

And here's the good news: getting the foundations sorted doesn't take months or cost a fortune. It just needs to be done properly.

So if you're thinking "we don’t need HR yet," you're right. You don't need full-time HR. But you're not too small for operational foundations. That's where I can help.

And that's exactly where I start. 🌱

💚 When people thrive, businesses do too. If you would like support reviewing your hiring flow, onboarding or people processes, I am always happy to help.
