VIRTUAL DESKTOPS

VIRTUAL DESKTOPS

In a move towards centralised data management, the growth of virtual desktop infrastructure is expected to be taken more seriously over the next year. Dubbed by some as the 'thin client' approach, processing power and data storage are centralised, replacing a user's computer with a dumb terminal that sends keyboard and mouse inputs and receives information to the screen. Importantly, there should be little change in user experience. Similar to cloud computing, there are cost savings to be had because the support and maintenance functions can be reduced. New recruits would not need a technician to build and install a PC for them, according to Deloitte, and "employees could even pick up a unit from the stationary cupboard". Other advantages include reduced power consumption and improved productivity because it takes less time to "boot up, shut down and receive software updates". There are security concerns but centralised data storage should afford organisations more control.
