The Office of National Statistics has recently published the most recent figures for adoptions in England and Wales. The statistics indicate that the number of adoptions rose from 4,481 in 2010, to 4,734, in 2011. There are still significantly more children waiting for Adoption than available adopters, and efforts are being focused on addressing how the system can be improved to increase the percentage of children who are permanently placed by the time they are 4 years old at the latest. Various consultations have been commenced recently to look at how this is best achieved, for example by reducing the circumstances in which siblings must be placed together. Any changes in policy brought about as a result of these consultations will then be worked into the Family Justice Modernisation Scheme which was recently announced and which features significant changes to practice and procedure in the hope that this will in turn reduce delay. It is likely that the next few years will see considerable changes for Children Lawyers, and we await the proposals with interest.
