Glorious Southport sunshine awaited our members on this superbly presented course. But players found the hard, fast links greens and the deep rough unforgiving. None more so than the Captain, who was about to fly away on his summer holidays the following day with a well known budget airline. And just like Ryanair, his shots looked great in the sky, but landed far from the target. The Captain’s latest golfing motto is ‘If at first you don’t succeed, lower your standards’ and this was heartily embraced by his playing partners Colin Gallimore (Courtyard Care) and David Moores (Geopost). Their targets rapidly shifted from ‘Can I win?’ to ‘Can I get a par?’ to ‘Can I get the honour?’ Dave managed to kill two birds with one stone by gaining both a par and the honour on the 8th. The magnificence of this dual achievement appeared to adversely affect his subsequent scoring. Yet Steve Howells (Bridge Insurance) easily rose above the other members of this fourball by shooting a very creditable score on the day of 32 points off a handicap of seven. Paul Walsh (St James Place) was our excellent sponsor, donating superb golfing gifts for those playing. And quite a few Hesketh members will be grateful to him, as due to wayward shots by a large proportion of the field, a number of brand new Titleist Pro VIs bearing his company logo are likely be found in the club’s rough in the coming months. No doubt Paul had seen one or two from the Society play before and viewed this as new form of viral marketing. St James Place can now prepare for an influx of Southport-based clients. Visitors won the nearest the pin prizes on the 2nd and 16th holes. Worsley Park Captain Phil Farr (a guest of Tim Roberts – I-Com) and Dick Browne (guest of Harry Lloyd – Stirling Lloyd) took these honours. The best visitor (indeed, the best score on the day) was from David Openshaw (guest of Philip Waxman – Ridgetown/CDI Global) with 37 points off a handicap of twenty-eight. Doughty competitor ‘Lucky Jim’ Gilliland (PSL Print Management) was once more in the prizes, gaining third place with 34 points being narrowly beaten by our much beloved President, Franklin Sinclair (Tuckers Solicitors). Franklin is always among the Society’s most brightly plumed golfers, but on this occasion was left looking as happy as a penguin in a microwave after learning he was runner-up in a card play-off with 35 points. Andy Murray’s defeat in the Wimbledon Men’s singles final was small potatoes compared to this setback for the popular former Captain, whose reaction made Colin Montgomerie look like the Dalai Lama. Despite playing better on the holes where he had blind shots, the man who could see the wood from the trees was Stuart Forrest (ICM) whose back nine of 21 points secured his victory. Well done Stuart - a new member of the Society in 2012 and our sponsor at the season opener at St Anne’s Old Links in March. Hesketh Golf Club was a delightful host to the Society on a beautifully memorable day where the sun shone brightly. We welcome members to join us on the coast once more at wonderful Wallasey Golf Club on 9th August. Book early!
