15 Minutes to Greater Success

There’s a simple three step approach that can enable you to be more successful in business and other parts of your life. Called ‘The Reviewing Model’ it can help you to significantly improve your performance and make it easier to realise your goals. It enables you to learn from your experiences, both good and bad, so that you are in a better position to progress in the way you want. By using the model for a few minutes to reflect on the outcome of any project, task or interaction you can identify the changes necessary to achieve greater success. So how does it work? The Reviewing Model simply requires you to ask yourself various questions after any outcome from which you would like to learn and improve. These questions fall under three steps, or areas, which are: ‘What?’, ‘So What?’ and, ‘Now What?’ Step 1: WHAT? What has happened? What did I experience? What did I do (e.g. How did I behave, think, feel, interact with others) in order to enable this particular outcome to arise? What can I learn from this? What does this tell me? Step 2: SO WHAT? What, if anything, are the implications of these learnings for how I do things in the future? How can I apply these insights? How can I change my approach or behaviour when faced with a similar task or situation? Where else can I use these lessons to positive effect? Step 3: NOW WHAT? When can I use these insights and make these changes? What is the first opportunity I will have to employ these changes and how will I implement them? As you will see, ‘Step 3’ of the model requires you to COMMIT to making the changes you have identified in a particular event or situation that is coming up. The sooner this event is due to happen the easier it will be to adopt the changes you want. To make it easier to make the changes you have identified it can be useful to spend a couple of minutes imagining being in the future event and experiencing, in your imagination, your new ways of thinking, behaving and feeling. The Reviewing Model is derived from the work of John Dewey and was first explained to me by Reg Connolly (Pegasus NLP) when I was studying for one of my Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) qualifications. The beauty of this technique is that it is so simple and yet can deliver such powerful results. When used in the business environment you can gain insights into some of the key factors that have contributed to a particular outcome. You can then determine: - What types of situation you can apply these learnings to in the future - How you can change your approach in these situations - The next project or situation in which you can apply these changes For instance, by reflecting on a team meeting that turned out better than expected or a report that was not well received you can start to identify the changes that will allow you to have more effective meetings and create more influential reports. And of course one of the great things about this model is that you can apply it to any area of your life, not just business.
