HR and Employer Challenges

Following the Prime Minister’s tougher national measures, a large proportion of businesses continue to work around the restrictions, and those businesses forced to close in England are to receive grants worth up to £3000 per month under the Local Restrictions Support Grant. The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme has been extended for one month with employees receiving 80% of their current salary which is more generous than the scheme that ended on the 31st October.

HR Support

This year has been a roller-coaster of challenges for businesses, including employee engagement and support.

Tribunal claims continue to rise, by over 18% in comparison to 12 months’ ago and tribunal trends have been driven by the impact of Covid-19 and with unemployment rates being at a four-year high across the country. England’s second lockdown will further exacerbate this knock-on effect, as Covid-19 restrictions place greater constraints on both businesses and individuals.

A significant area for employers to consider are the mental health issues of employees that have and are being exposed to a multitude of issues relating to stress, for example, anxiety and those who have had bereavements during lockdown. These underlying issues could manifest in increased absenteeism, poor production and output, increased irritability, poor communication, and an increase in alcohol and drug use, all having a direct impact upon the workplace.

HR Connect believes that ‘prevention is better than the cure’ and by working alongside business owners to tackle, and communicate these issues into their managers and staff, this can help to reduce workplace conflict. A large proportion of businesses have not recently addressed and communicated their workplace policies, to accommodate for the challenges and changes experienced this year which could leave many organisations exposed to future conflict and claims.
