A genuine leather jacket or coat is typically an expensive investment, but with proper care, it can last for many, many years. In many cases, if you use the proper methods, you can clean your leather jacket at home. It is critical to understand the type of leather you are buying and to ensure that it is genuine leather. Many synthetic products may appear identical, but their leather jacket cleaning and care requirements are vastly different.

Types of leather jacket cleaning:

Leather jacket cleaning comes in a variety of grades and finishes, which affects how it is cleaned. The four most common types of leather are as follows:

  • Suede:

The soft underside of a split-grain animal hide is used to make natural suede leather. It has a nappy finish that stains easily. Suede jackets, accessories, and furniture require special care and cleaning.

  • Nubuck:

Nubuck, which resembles suede in appearance, is made from the top of an animal hide that has been finely sanded and buffed to produce the softest, velvety leather finish. Nubuck care techniques are similar to suede, and stain removal is usually done by a professional.

  • Aniline:

Aniline leather is full-grain leather that has been chemically treated with aniline. This is the most commonly used type of leather for jackets.

  • Nappa:

Nappa leather is the highest grade of leather and is made from a full-grain sheep or lamb hide.
