It was only in August this year that viewers were glued to E! watching socialite and reality television star Kim Kardashian wed basketball star Kris Humphries. However, the marriage is already said to be over with Kim issuing a statement citing. 'I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned.’ But how hard could they have tried, if they have only been married for 72 days? In England and Wales, divorce proceedings can only be issued one year after the date of marriage. If parties want to end their marriage before then, they need to have an annulment. There are extremely strict conditions for an annulment to take place and they are rare. The reasoning behind the one year rule is to encourage couples to work at their marriage and prevent them from making hasty decisions in ending a short marriage. The Kardashians are not without their critics and are very shrewd businesswomen. The wedding itself net the couple $18 million and the critics have been quick to point out this may have been a marriage which took place solely for publicity purposes, given the commercial incentive. It remains to be seen how the divorce itself pans out, although Kim apparently has a pre-nuptial agreement in place. The aftermath of the short marriage however, will no doubt form part of the Kardashians future shows.
