Flash used to be the only way to produce visibly exiting websites, with animation and a variety of fonts. People used flash as a means of expressing their creativity online. It was a method of showing your companies individuality. Then Apple invented the iPhone. Once the iPhone was released with it's lack of support for flash, people found that they couldn't view a lot of the websites they were used to. Apples determination not to offer support for flash, even on the newer models, and on the iPad, forced most web developers to change the way they created their sites. Flash also had issues with Accessibility. Due to the fact that Flash was a collection of pictures, things such as Screen Readers for the visibly impaired, couldn't read the text out-loud to consumers. Search Engine Optimization was also an issue. If Google cannot read the text on your site, how is it to know where to place you in the rankings? There are now ways of reproducing these effects in a way that the non-flash supported browsers can understand. In one way the loss of flash forces us to accept more challenging ways of being creative online, with various means of creating the effects that were once created with flash, although personally I think it is a breath of fresh air. With emerging technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3 there are better ways of creating websites, in a more compatible and future proof way. Rarely now do I log onto a website to be bombarded by a technicolor assault upon my retina, accompanied by loud music, garish animation, and impossible to follow navigation. If your website still requires Flash to run it would be worth noting that an increasing amount of people access the internet via mobile devices. Devices running iOS (iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad) may not support flash, but also the support for flash is also very poor or non-existant in many other devices too. It may be Apple that instigated Flash's decline, but in my opinion, that's something for which they should be heartily thanked!
