I am about to write a very spontaneous article .
I was looking through my profile when this thought popped into my head. Normally this is nothing unusual as my brain works at 100 miles per hour. However, when my kids future it's at stake, I do have to stop and think!
In order to calm my little head down, I decided to write down my thoughts on the future and if as humans are doing the best for our humankind.
In the recent years we have seen the rise of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SnapChat, Voice Search as well as introduction of Alexa and Google Home. All of these companies have brought some joy into our lives.
For example Facebook has allowed us to keep in touch with our family and friends all around the world. Youtube is providing us with entertaining content around the clock. Twitter allows me personally to share my views and get involved in conversation with strangers. Google has provided us with the best search engine in the world. Today we have no reason not to communicate with our loved ones and strangers alike.
The world is a much smaller places thanks to the companies I have mentioned earlier.
However, I am yet to mention AI.
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence and it's this was scares me the most. I first studied AI when I was 16 years of age. Even through my education I wished that AI would not be part of my or my kids life. At this point AI was still in it's infancy and totally useless.
Today this is no longer true!
You are using AI every single day without even knowing it. Google uses AI to provide you with the best search results, Facebook uses AI to provide with the content you are most likely to engage with, Alexa listens to you so that Amazon can ship items to you before you have even ordered them, Google Home also wants to invade your home.
All this might be completely new to you and sometimes the less you know the better.
As the computers connect and learn to communicate with each other effectively, we will see even faster developments in AI.
You might think that AI only works on the Internet however, this far from the truth.
In just less than 5 years we will have access to self-drive cars. When I say self-drive cars I mean the ones without any controls. In fact they are most likely going to be controlled by your smartphones. The first set of cars will only work within major city parameters. However, within 10 years we should see this expand to the entire Europe.
AI is also being used in combat. For example USA wants to be the first country in the world to introduce “robot solders”.
But the big question is: Where does this all stop?
My opinion is that it will not stop! We are heading towards the “Terminator” days. This was the film I watched when I was only 8 years old. Did I think this would happen in my life time? NO! However, today I think different.
Should we stop AI developments?
My view is that we should continue. However, the use of AI needs to be regulated and only applied to causes which will help us in the long term.
We don't need Robots to help us.
What we need is better understanding of terminal illnesses and how we can apply AI to stop them.
