If you’re looking to get the most out of your digital marketing campaign, it’s important to know what works. A recent infographic published by Smart Insights, has provided a valuable look into which digital marketing techniques are proving to be the most successful so far in 2016.  In this two-part feature, you’ll discover more about the most effective techniques and why they are providing great results.

Content Marketing – 22%

It’s no surprise to see that content marketing is leading the results, with 22% of those surveyed claiming they expect it to have the biggest commercial impact on their business. A lot of focus has been placed on valuable content over the past few years. Search engines in particular highlight websites and businesses that are frequently publishing relevant, valuable content. So if you’re looking at ways to improve your campaign, your content marketing strategy is the first thing you should look into.

Big Data – 17%

Data has always been important in the digital marketing world. However, as pointed out in a very informative article on SAS, the amount of data used in digital marketing these days has significantly increased compared to a decade ago. Big data is extremely important if you want to ensure your marketing campaign is as effective as it could be.  In itself, it isn’t going to produce results, but it’s the insights you gain from the data collected which enables you to improve your marketing campaign. It has the potential to help with customer engagement, as well as customer loyalty and retention.

The most beneficial forms of big data used for marketing include transactional, and behavioural metrics, asset management, budgetary controls and financial data including sales, profits and revenue.

 Marketing Automation – 13%

A lot of marketers swear by marketing automation. However, if you’re new to digital marketing it’s likely something you’re not overly familiar with. It basically involves  software that automatically handles various marketing tasks. This includes sending out emails, handling Social Media posts and completing various website actions. When done correctly, it can provide excellent returns and significantly boost revenue. One of its key benefits is it saves a lot of time in carrying out each of the tasks manually (the words "obvious" and "stating" come to mind).

However, one of the main mistakes companies make with marketing automation is trying to fast-tracking their leads. This means buying email lists rather than gradually building up a customer database. It may seem like a great idea in the short term, but it’s not going to be as effective as building up an organic list over time.

Mobile marketing – 12%

The rise of the Smartphone has potentially had the biggest impact on marketing and it’s a trend that’s continuing to increase in popularity. As more consumers turn to their mobiles and tablet devices to shop and find out more about businesses, mobile marketing has become an essential part of any marketing campaign. Mobile marketing covers a whole range of activities from sending branded marketing messages to directing consumers to a mobile friendly website.

If your business isn’t incorporating mobile marketing into its strategy, now is definitely the time to start. Quirk has a fantastic in-depth guide to mobile marketing, backed up by some interesting facts and figures.

So there you have it – the top marketing techniques that have had the biggest commercial impact so far in 2016.
