Brookson is proud to support Future Tech Studio School, a new and exciting way of learning for 14-19 year-olds in Warrington.
The school is set to open in 2014 for year 10 and 12 students and is intended to offer a fresh approach to education that furnishes young people with the skills they need to prepare for the working world. With most of the teaching done primarily through enterprise projects and hands-on tasks as well as a real emphasis on personalised learning, the small facility for up to 300 students will keep a 9am-5pm day. Overall, it will be more like a workplace than a school- perfect to help young people get ready to take their place in the working world.
To do this, the school will give youngsters the chance to work with real companies and experience genuine workplaces, as well as studying a range of vocational subjects with direct relevance to a number of industries alongside academic studies. Level 2 and 3 qualifications including GCSEs in English, Maths and Science will be on the curriculum alongside vocational courses. Of course, this will mean that students need access to excellent facilities and cutting-edge technology, which is why a brand new building is under construction on the Winwick Road campus of Warrington Business School.
The new school has been born out of a partnership between Warrington Collegiate Education Trust and more than 30 employers in the local area, including Brookson, Barclays Global Technology Centre, United Utilities and The Environment Agency. Future Tech Studio will offer young people the opportunity to study for qualifications in in specific sectors, including business and finance, IT and telecommunications and energy and infrastructure engineering - a perfect opportunity for local businesses to play a role in nurturing the skills they continue to need.
“I believe the Future Tech Studio concept is a forward thinking innovative idea bringing education together with the real world of work,” says Brookson HR director Peter Metcalf.
“Brookson has supported this initiative spearheaded by the Warrington Collegiate from the very start and it is a way local businesses can give something back to the community. One of our apprentices was recently awarded apprentice of the Year at the Warrington Business Awards 2013 and I see our involvement in the Future Tech Studio initiative being the next step in identifying and attracting the very best local talent from a very early age.”
Pupils will be able to apply to Future Tech Studio through their local authority for year 10 entry, while applications for entry in year 12 will be made directly to the school. A total of 55 pupils will start in each of these year groups next in 2014-15, after which the school will take new pupils each year.
On Wednesday September 18th, more than 300 young people, parents and other interested guests arrived at the Warrington Business School for the official launch event to find out more about the school and meet employers. By this point, more than 40 applications had already been received, suggesting that competition could be fierce. Another two taster events are scheduled for October 16th and November 7th.
