The aim of the government is to reduce the incidence of people being away from work due to injury or sickness when it isn't necessary. For most of us, perhaps the main reason for work is to earn an income to support ourselves and our families. However, work can be good for us in other ways: • It is generally beneficial for overall health • It helps give people a sense of self worth • It reduces the chances of depression associated with sickness • It is often an aid to recovery With all this in mind, the government is introducing changes in April that affect how doctors advise employers about whether and when employees are fit for work following periods of sickness absence.
