Last year, there were various reports in the press featuring wealthy women being forced to pay generous Divorce settlements to their ex-husbands following the end of the marriage, in contrast to the more traditional model. A report released this week suggests that far from being the exception, such arrangements will become increasingly common as more couples than ever comprise of "women marrying down." The report, prepared by Spanish University, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, suggests that in 21 countries around the world, more women now marry "down" financially than "up" meaning that on Divorce, they are more likely to be the one forced to pay out. With changes to Employment Law making it easier and more common for parents to share childcare duties, rather than adhering to the traditional arrangement of the mother taking more time out of a career, it is likely this will increase further in the coming years.
