A spooky walk through the market-entry graveyard and how to stay out of it.
Happy Halloween weekend. The UK doorsteps will be full of costumes, sweets and the odd fright. But the scariest sight for a business leader isn’t a ghost at the door. It’s a gravestone with your company’s name on it.
Every year, overseas businesses arrive in the UK with a confident plan. Some thrive. Others quietly disappear after a few expensive months. The graves below are composites, not real companies, and each one carries a lesson. Bring a torch.
1. Here lies the price that looked fine until checkoutLast words: “Delivery is a small extra. Nobody minds.”
Cause of death: Surprise costs at the final step. In a March 2026 Savanta survey for Ingrid, 82% of UK shoppers said unexpected delivery costs at checkout would make them reconsider. UK rules on hidden fees also tightened in 2025.
Resurrection step: Show the full price, with delivery and tax, from the first page.
Last words: “It’ll get there eventually.”
Cause of death: A vague or broken promise. A 2026 survey of 2,000 UK consumers by Locus and PAN found delivery communication failures near the top of shoppers’ frustrations, with speed expectations comparatively modest.
Resurrection step: Promise a realistic window, then update customers before they have to ask.
Last words: “Returns are rare where we’re from.”
Cause of death: A returns process that feels like a punishment. The same Savanta survey found 54% of UK shoppers keep items they don’t want because returning them feels stressful. Even if you sell B2B, your buyers are shoppers too.
Resurrection step: Make a return something a customer can finish in minutes.
Last words: “They said they knew everyone.”
Cause of death: A local agent or distributor chosen on charm instead of evidence.
Resurrection step: Check references, start with a small trial contract, and agree in writing what success looks like.
Last words: “It sounds great back home.”
Cause of death: Names, slogans and humour that land differently in the UK.
Resurrection step: Test your messaging with real UK customers before launch. Read it aloud to someone who grew up here.
Last words: “We’ll break even by spring.”
Cause of death: Underestimating how long it takes to build trust and learn a new market.
Resurrection step: Stress-test the plan. What happens if sales take twice as long as forecast?
Last words: “Let’s check with head office.”
Cause of death: Every decision routed through another time zone, so the market moved on without you.
Resurrection step: Give a UK lead real authority within clear limits.
One composite business did things differently. It showed the full price upfront, set a realistic delivery window, made returns easy, vetted its partner, tested its messaging, funded a longer runway and trusted a UK lead to decide. It wasn’t flawless. It was prepared, and that is the difference between a graveyard and a growth story.
