Last Friday (14 September) the government backed the Mental Health (Discrimination) Bill, a private member’s bill, which is now heading closer towards becoming law. The Bill, which has been supported by the leading mental health charities, proposes significant changes to existing law which has prevented individuals who have been detained under the Mental Health Act from participating in normal aspects of societal life. At present, the law does not allow such individuals to: carry out jury service; be appointed as a statutory company director; serve as a school governor; or be an MP. The latest proposed reforms to remove the above archaic provisions are a step towards reintegrating the most excluded individuals into society by challenging the stigma and untruths surrounding mental health conditions. I welcome these changes and hope that these amendments will receive positive media coverage to start remedying the stereotyping that continues to impact upon the lives of those living with a mental health condition.
