When we accept an offer from a new employer, we automatically join a new working environment. However, we had nothing to do with it’s creation: it was formed entirely without any input from us.
And because nobody has any influence over the fashioning of a working environment that existed before they joined it, next to nobody thinks they can influence it after they join it - WRONG.
If we think about our home and social environments, we all attempt to mould, fashion, modify and refine these so that they match our values and drivers, our mores and ethos and the way you prefer to behave. We do this continuously as a matter of course and yet very very few of us ever think of putting the same effort into our working environment.
But it’s the working environment we spend 40 hours a week in, often unhappily. If you’re unhappy with your working environment maybe it’s time to learn how to proactively shape and modify it to your own satisfaction.
