I recently had an opportunity with a new start up company, they wanted a server system to serve 150 users, plus exchange and a CRM system.
Well this was perfect to test Office 365 and its affordability. As a Microsoft Cloud partner we have many clients who currently use Office 365 as their email and communications solution, but mpst of these only have around 50 users.
Anyway we quoted on a full in house server system with support and maintenance, then a hybrid system, that deals with your sharing onsite but passes your email, crm and communications to the cloud.
The cost difference was staggering with a saving over 5 years of over 50% on the full in house server system.
why is it so much cheaper? easy, you have no support or maintenance costs as this is dealt with in microsofts datacentre, plus as most of the processing is done in the cloud, the onsite server you require is a much lower spec therefore your capital costs are much lower in the first place.
not only that but Office 365 also offers the opportunity to have Office professional Plus 2010 for only £8 per month per user. With the recent price increases on microsoft volume licensing, this is a steal, with the added benefit of being able to download and install onto upto 6 pc's(only one being used at a time).
